I don’t remember this incident, but this is what I am told by my mother.
When I was a child, maybe seven, my mother was speculating as to whether or not St Patrick was an invention of the Church. I wasn’t supposed to be listening in, but naturally I did. Apparently I went off and wrote an essay for school about how St Patrick probably never existed. There were ructions.
Perhaps it would be relevant to mention here that I went to a convent school and some of my teachers were nuns. As you can imagine, my primary school teachers loved me (and therein hang several tales).
Naturally at college I was fascinated by the theory of the Two Patricks.
